Liège waffles are dense, sweet, and made from a brioche-like yeasted dough infused with white pearl sugars. They have a slight crunch on the outside with a soft, chewy inside. Unlike a Brussels waffle, which is what most Americans associate with a Belgian waffle, a Liège waffle has a smaller, rounded shape.
These waffles originated in the French-speaking region of Liège, Belgium around the 1800’s. Pronounced as "lē-ˈezh" or “lee-edge,” these waffles are traditionally consumed as a Belgian street food. Liège waffles can be eaten anytime of the day and served plain for breakfast or with toppings as a dessert.
